Android 3.0 Tablets Compared

If you want the most up to date Android tablet, then you'll need to pick up one of the tablets listed below. These are the current crop of Android 3.0 tablets available in the UK. Android 3.0 (and other versions of Android 3.x) - also known as Android Honeycomb - has been specifically designed for a tablet computer format so you can expect the best experience. Previous versions of Android were designed for Smartphones and that means that on a tablet PC, they're generally just scaled up versions of what you could get on a mobile.

Google designed Android 3.0 so that it was ready to take on iOS on the iPad. This means is substantially more polished that previous versions of Android. If you've already got Android on your Smartphone it also means you can sync data and set-up between your phone and tablet PC.

What Are The Android 3.0 Tablet Options?

You have 5 options if you want to find the best Android tablet for you, these are as follows:

  1. Motorola Xoom
  2. Acer Iconia
  3. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
  4. ASUS Eee Pad Transformer
  5. LG Optimus Pad

The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer provides a decent all-round spec at a good value price. The Acer Iconia and Motorola Xoom have even more flexibility with additional features but are a bit more expensive. The LG Optimus stands out as the only tablet to offer 3D video capabilities and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 delivers a more stylish and slick experience - probably the closest to the iPad.

So now you're ready to choose your tablet computer, lets have a look at the options...

Motorola Xoom

The Xoom has a powerful processor and is a 10.1-inch tablet with responsive capacitive multitouch screen, HDMI port and fairly stylish design. 3G or Wi-Fi capability and a strong battery life. It is expensive but there are deals to be had if you shop around.

Acer Iconia A500

Again, it's a 10.1-inch tablet PC with capacitive multi-touch screen. You have a powerful processor and a range of ports (HDMI and full-size USB) to give flexibility. It runs out of charge slightly quicker than the Motorola Xoom but is also not quite as expensive.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

The Samsung Android tablet also offers the same size and responsive capacitive screen. The processor deals with Android well and battery life is strong again. It's point of differentiation though is that it's very light and very thin. It's comparable to the iPad 2 in performance and style of design. The downside to this is that it doesn't have any ports to expand the memory and you'll need to buy accessories to attach peripheral devices.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer

This tablet offers a similar spec but at the lowest price. It has proven very popular as it offers the possibility to buy a keyboard dock and attach it to the tablet to turn it into a netbook-like computer. It's got a good screen and decent battery life, but lacks a USB port on the tablet itself and the WebCam isn't as strong. However, it's one of the best sellers on Amazon as it's a highly competitive price for a premium tablet PC.

LG Optimus Pad

The final Android 3.0 tablet is the LG Optimus Pad. It has a fairly comparable spec to the other tablets but is slightly smaller at 8.9-inches (the same size as an iPad). Its point of differentiation is that you can use it to record video in 3D. Playback options are limited on the tablet, but you can connect it to a 3D TV and watch back those recordings in full 3D. It has the best quality cameras compared with the other Android tablets but the flip side to all of this is that it's substantially more expensive that the tablets above.
